Underwood calculators "dry ink jet" model 200 400 410

In 1986 Olivetti decided to introduce a new line of calculators, with the technology of dry ink jet. They were produced both in Olivetti and Underwood brand.

There were 3 models Olivetti/Underwood:
Underwood 200 (Olivetti Divisumma 232PD)
Underwood 400 (Olivetti Logos 262PD)
Underwood 410 (Olivetti Logos 264PD)

In fact, they were the same and differ only in their labels, and the body color.

All models in this line are equipped with the "Silent Dry" printer with "Ink Jet" technology (exclusive to Olivetti), which consists of emitting graphite from a nib subjected to high voltage.

The main features are:

Linear motor: the head moves by sliding the nib carriage across a permanent magnetic field. Direction reversal is achieved by varying the polarity of the current in the carriage coil. Moving parts are thus reduced to just the "carriage," resulting in extremely quiet operation and reliability.

Nib: The dry ink jet was also very silent and allowed quality printing. The nib contains a special black graphite. The writing capacity is approximately 150,000 characters.

Printer: dot matrix (S x 7), 20 column capacity, speed 1.8 lines/sec. on plain paper in a roll, 57 mm wide.

Display: Digitron 7-segment digit display with decimal point and apostrophe for editing; 12 digits and a minus sign in the 13th; error and busy totalizer indication; Display character size: 5.3 x 2.4 mm.

MOS: Standard Hitachi

Here some documents.

1: This is the launch plan of the Underwood silent dry calculators, an interesting document, reserved to distributors, that explain the situation of the market in 1985 and how will be promoted these calculators.

In this document there are also some details on the situation of the competition in Italy on calculators.
It says that "The competition is essentially Japanese manufacturers. They offer a good product with a very competitive price-performance ratio. Despite this, Olivetti products are still preferred (especially in our country) thanks to some basic performance features that make the machine easy to use. Another strength is the widespread nature of our sales and technical support network, unmatched by any other competitor".

This is a chart with market shares

You can see that:

1- it's a chart made with a typewriter.
2- Olivetti had around half of the market.
3- In the second position there is Canon, with only 9%
